Early Spring Algae: Treatments, Bacteria and Natural Options
In our last post we covered getting your filtration in shape for spring. Once that foundation is set, the next step is rebuilding your beneficial bacteria, trying natural options, and knowing what to reach for if algae breaks through anyway.
Rebuild Your Beneficial Bacteria
Dose weekly at startup to re-seed your biological filter, reduce ammonia, and break down winter organic waste. Less organic matter means less algae fuel:
- MICROBE-LIFT PL — re-seeds your biological filter and reduces ammonia at startup
- MICROBE-LIFT Spring/Summer Cleaner — breaks down leaves, sludge, and organic waste that accumulated over winter
A Natural Treatment to Try Before Reaching for Harsher Options
Barley straw is one of the most trusted natural tools in pond keeping. It releases natural compounds that make water less hospitable to new algae growth — without harming fish, plants, or beneficial bacteria. Works best started early in the season:
- Aquascape Concentrated Barley Straw Pellets — clean, convenient pellets; drop them in at startup and replenish throughout the season
- Barley Straw Extract — liquid concentrate that gets to work faster; ideal if you're seeing early algae growth and want a quick natural response
When You Need to Treat Existing Algae
If you're dealing with heavy string algae, start by physically removing as much as possible by hand or with your skimmer net before treating. Pulling out the bulk first makes treatments more effective and prevents dead algae from sinking and adding to your nutrient load.
All products below are safe for fish and plants when used as directed. Ensure good aeration is running before treating:
- Aquascape EcoBlast — granular, works on contact for string algae on rocks and waterfalls at any water temperature
- Aquascape Algaecide — liquid treatment targeting suspended green water algae throughout the water column
- Aquascape Rapid Clear Flocculant — clumps suspended debris after treatment or early spring stirring so your filter can capture and remove it, clearing your pond within 24 hours
Your Spring Algae Checklist
- Clean skimmer debris net and replace worn filter pads
- Refresh or add biological filter media
- Replace UV bulb
- Dose Beneficial Bacteria weekly
- Try Barley Straw Pellets or Extract as a natural first step
- Physically remove excess string algae before treating
- Keep EcoBlast, Algaecide, and Rapid Clear Flocculant on hand for breakthrough algae
