When to Stop (and Start) Feeding Your Pond Fish in Winter

When to Stop (and Start) Feeding Your Pond Fish in Winter

One of the most common questions pond owners ask is: "Should I feed my fish in winter?" The answer depends entirely on water temperature.

Temperature Guidelines

Fish are cold-blooded, meaning their metabolism matches the water temperature. As temperatures drop, their digestive systems slow dramatically.

Use a thermometer to help you make informed decisions.

Below 50°F: Stop feeding completely

Why Stop Feeding?

When water temperatures drop below 50°F, fish can't properly digest food. Undigested food sitting in their system during winter dormancy can cause serious health problems.

Spring Feeding

Wait until water temperatures consistently stay above 50°F for several days before resuming feeding. Start with small amounts of wheat germ food, then gradually transition back to regular food as temperatures warm above 60°F.

The golden rule: When in doubt, don't feed. It's always safer to stop feeding too early than too late.
