For Marine Aquarium Use.

A highly accurate, easy to use, wide range specific gravity meter for marine aquarium use. Designed to eliminate inaccuracy issues common with quick-dip hydrometers while helping you take a water sample from a greater depth that is free of the negative impact of surface influences.

  • Takes a more 'true' water sample at greater depths, avoiding inaccurate surface sampling
  • Accurate to ±0.001 specific gravity and salinity (PPT) measurements
  • Self-leveling, hanging device collects perfect samples
  • Scientifically verified design offers the ultimate in accuracy

Note: Before using for the first time, to season the measurement needle, fill the hydrometer with water from your aquarium and allow it to sit full of this water on a level surface for 24 hours. This rehydrates the calibration disc to its original specs and calibration standard and will provide the most accurate readings going forward.

  1. Submerge hydrometer approximately 6 inches to water level line.
  2. When water reaches the fill line level (top of dam) remove hydrometer and place on a level surface to take the most accurate reading.
  3. Avoid air bubble adherence to the pointer as this will result in inaccurate, higher than normal readings. Should air bubbles collect on pointer, gently tap hydrometer to dislodge them before taking your reading.
  4. Read specific gravity on inside scale and salinity in parts per thousand (PPT) on the outside scale.
  5. Rinse with fresh water after each use to maintain optimum accuracy.

Salt deposits may accumulate on pointer and will result in inaccurate readings. If salt crystallizes inside your unit, soak it in lukewarm water or vinegar for 30 minutes, rinse with fresh water and allow to air dry. Rinse again with warm fresh water before next use.

Hikari AccuProbe Individually Calibrated Hydrometer – Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the Hikari AccuProbe Individually Calibrated Hydrometer?

The Hikari AccuProbe Individually Calibrated Hydrometer is an aquarium water-testing instrument designed to measure specific gravity, helping saltwater aquarium owners monitor water salinity. Its individual calibration is intended to support accurate readings when used according to the manufacturer's instructions. Maintaining appropriate salinity is important for the health of marine fish and other saltwater aquarium inhabitants.

2. What does a hydrometer measure in a saltwater aquarium?

A hydrometer measures the specific gravity of aquarium water, which compares the density of the water sample with the density of pure water under specified conditions. Because dissolved salts increase water density, specific gravity can be used to estimate salinity. Regular measurements help aquarium keepers maintain stable water conditions for marine organisms.

3. What does individually calibrated mean for the Hikari AccuProbe Hydrometer?

Individually calibrated means the instrument is calibrated or checked on an individual basis rather than relying solely on a general production setting. This can help account for differences between instruments. For the precise calibration procedure, reference temperature, and accuracy specifications of the Hikari AccuProbe, consult the product documentation.

4. How do I use the Hikari AccuProbe Individually Calibrated Hydrometer?

Use the Hikari AccuProbe according to its specific instructions. Typically, a hydrometer is placed in an appropriate water sample or used in its designated measuring chamber, depending on its design. Allow the reading to stabilize, position the instrument correctly, and read the specific gravity scale at the specified reference point. Avoid introducing air bubbles that could affect the result.

5. What specific gravity should a saltwater aquarium have?

Many marine aquariums are maintained at a specific gravity of approximately 1.023–1.026, with around 1.025 commonly used for reef aquariums. The ideal target depends on the aquarium's inhabitants and husbandry requirements. Follow the recommendations appropriate for your fish, corals, and other marine organisms, and prioritize stability over sudden changes.

6. How often should I check aquarium salinity with the Hikari AccuProbe?

Check salinity regularly, especially when setting up a marine aquarium, preparing saltwater, performing water changes, or replacing water lost through evaporation. More frequent checks may be helpful in reef aquariums or systems with sensitive inhabitants. Consistent monitoring helps identify changes before they become a problem for marine life.

7. Can the Hikari AccuProbe Hydrometer be used for reef aquariums?

A hydrometer can be useful for monitoring salinity in a reef aquarium, provided its measurement range and accuracy meet the aquarium's requirements. Reef tanks often contain corals and invertebrates that are sensitive to salinity fluctuations. Check the Hikari AccuProbe's specifications and compare its readings with a trusted reference instrument when precision is especially important.

8. How do I maintain the accuracy of the Hikari AccuProbe Hydrometer?

Rinse the hydrometer with fresh water after use, remove salt deposits, and allow it to dry as recommended by the manufacturer. Handle the instrument carefully to avoid damage and store it in a clean, safe place. Follow the manufacturer's guidance for checking calibration and verify readings periodically against a reliable reference method.

9. What can cause incorrect hydrometer readings?

Incorrect readings can result from air bubbles, salt deposits, improper positioning, temperature differences, contamination, or reading the scale incorrectly. Some hydrometers are calibrated for a particular reference temperature, so water temperature may affect the result. Follow the instrument's instructions and make sure the sample and measuring method are appropriate for its design.

10. Is the Hikari AccuProbe Hydrometer suitable for freshwater aquariums?

The primary use of a marine aquarium hydrometer is to measure specific gravity in saltwater or brackish-water applications. It may show readings in freshwater, but its usefulness depends on the instrument's scale, sensitivity, and intended application. Check the product specifications before using it for freshwater testing, particularly if precise measurements are required.

11. What is the difference between a hydrometer and a refractometer?

A hydrometer estimates specific gravity by measuring water density, while a refractometer estimates salinity or concentration by measuring how light bends through a sample. Both can be used for aquarium salinity monitoring when properly calibrated and used correctly. The best choice depends on your desired accuracy, budget, ease of use, and maintenance preferences.

12. Why is stable salinity important for marine aquariums?

Stable salinity helps marine fish, corals, and invertebrates maintain normal osmotic balance and other essential biological processes. Sudden changes can stress aquarium inhabitants, particularly sensitive reef species. Use the Hikari AccuProbe Individually Calibrated Hydrometer to monitor specific gravity consistently, and make any necessary adjustments gradually using an appropriate saltwater or freshwater correction method.
